Overview

Gallium phytate Ga 67 is a radiopharmaceutical agent in which the radioisotope gallium-67 is chelated with phytate (inositol hexaphosphate). It is used primarily as a diagnostic imaging agent in nuclear medicine. The compound accumulates in areas of altered reticuloendothelial activity, such as the liver and spleen, and can be used for scintigraphic evaluation of hepatic function or to assess reticuloendothelial system disorders. Its mechanism involves localization via phagocytosis by Kupffer cells and other components of the mononuclear phagocyte system. Gallium-67 emits gamma radiation suitable for detection by gamma cameras.
