Overview

Galphimia glauca is a medicinal plant species endemic to Mexico, traditionally used to treat mental disorders, inflammation, and allergic conditions. A standardized phytopharmaceutical extract of the plant, primarily characterized by its content of nor-seco-triterpenoids known as galphimines (specifically Galphimine-B), has been developed for the treatment of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and Social Anxiety Disorder. Its primary mechanism of action involves the selective modulation of dopaminergic neurons within the ventral tegmental area (VTA) by acting as an antagonist at N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. Clinical studies have demonstrated that the standardized extract provides anxiolytic efficacy comparable to benzodiazepines (such as lorazepam and alprazolam) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (sertraline), but with a significantly lower incidence of adverse effects like daytime sleepiness. Additionally, it is used in homeopathic preparations for seasonal allergic rhinitis and is being investigated for potential anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, and antipsychotic properties.
