Overview

Gamma-cyclodextrin is a cyclic oligosaccharide known for its ability to form inclusion complexes with various molecules. It acts as a host molecule, encapsulating guest molecules within its hydrophobic cavity. This property allows it to increase the water solubility, absorption, and bioavailability of poorly soluble compounds, such as ginsenosides and berberine. It is also utilized in non-pharmaceutical applications, including as an additive in lithium metal batteries to improve ion transference and as a crosslinker in the development of topologically-crosslinked hydrogels. A modified form of gamma-cyclodextrin, Sugammadex, is used to specifically bind and reverse the effects of steroidal muscle relaxants like rocuronium and vecuronium.
