Gamma delta tocotrienols is a tocotrienol-enriched fraction (TRF) derived from palm oil, primarily composed of the gamma and delta isomers of tocotrienol, which are members of the vitamin E family. It is being investigated as a nutraceutical supplement for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, particularly as an adjunct to statin therapy. The primary mechanism of action involves the post-transcriptional suppression and accelerated degradation of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in the mevalonate pathway for cholesterol biosynthesis. By reducing the cellular pool of HMG-CoA reductase, gamma delta tocotrienols inhibit hepatic cholesterol production and lower serum LDL cholesterol levels. The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has conducted Phase 3 clinical trials to evaluate the lipid-lowering effects of this specific tocotrienol fraction in hypercholesterolemic subjects.
