Overview

Gamma-globulin, specifically intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), is a therapeutic preparation of pooled immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies derived from the plasma of thousands of healthy donors. In the context of the clinical trial NCT04264858 conducted by Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, it was evaluated as a treatment for acute severe COVID-19 pneumonia, serving as a standard-of-care comparator for convalescent immunoglobulin. IVIG is utilized for its broad immunomodulatory properties, which include the neutralization of inflammatory cytokines, blocking of Fc receptors on myeloid cells to suppress autoantibody-mediated damage, and inhibition of the complement cascade. These actions are intended to mitigate the hyperinflammatory response and systemic inflammation, often referred to as a cytokine storm, which is a hallmark of severe viral pneumonia.
