Overview

Gamma-glutamylcysteine is a naturally occurring dipeptide composed of gamma-glutamate and cysteine. It is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of glutathione, formed by the enzyme glutamate-cysteine ligase and subsequently converted to glutathione by glutathione synthase. As a precursor to glutathione (GSH), it plays a critical role in cellular antioxidant defense mechanisms. Supplementation with gamma-glutamylcysteine has been shown to increase intracellular GSH levels, reduce oxidative stress, apoptosis, and inflammation in human cells, suggesting potential neuroprotective effects and possible therapeutic use for disorders associated with GSH depletion such as neurodegenerative diseases[5][4]. It is primarily used for research purposes.
