Overview

gamma-MSH (g-MSH) is a synthetic melanocyte-stimulating hormone peptide analogue developed by **Teleost Biopharmaceuticals** in collaboration with the **University of Arizona**. The drug is a stable synthetic version of the naturally occurring peptide derived from pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC). It acts as an agonist of the **melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1-R)** located on melanocytes, where it triggers melanogenesis (the production of melanin) in epidermal tissue. A key feature of this synthetic analogue is its ability to induce melanin production without causing homologous desensitization of the MC1-R receptors and without requiring UV exposure. The peptide is designed for transdermal delivery, either via a multi-day skin patch or topical formulations like creams and lotions, and is intended for applications in tanning, sun protection, and general skin care. Notably, the peptide does not cross the blood-brain barrier.
