Gamma-tocopherol is a naturally occurring form of vitamin E and a member of the tocopherols family. It is characterized by methyl groups at positions 7 and 8 on the chroman ring and has the molecular formula C28H48O2[1][9]. Gamma-tocopherol is the predominant form of vitamin E in plant seeds and derived products such as nuts and vegetable oils[6]. It acts as a fat-soluble antioxidant with unique properties compared to alpha-tocopherols; specifically, it is considered more effective at scavenging reactive nitrogen species[5]. Unlike alpha-tocopherols which are preferentially retained in human tissues due to specific transport proteins, gamma-tocoperhol is more rapidly metabolized and excreted from the body[5]. Mechanistically, it inhibits cyclooxygenase activity—contributing to anti-inflammatory effects—and protects against oxidative stress by neutralizing free radicals[6][5]. Clinical studies have explored its potential benefits in conditions involving inflammation or oxidative damage but evidence for clinical efficacy remains limited[4][5].
