gamma-tocotrienol

Gamma-tocotrienol is one of the four naturally occurring tocotrienols (alpha, beta, gamma, delta), which are members of the vitamin E family. It is a lipid-soluble compound found in sources such as palm oil and rice bran oil. Gamma-tocotrienol exhibits potent antioxidant properties by neutralizing free radicals and protecting cells from oxidative damage. Its lipophilic nature allows it to integrate into cell membranes, stabilizing them and preventing lipid peroxidation. In addition to its antioxidant effects, gamma-tocotrienol modulates cellular pathways involved in inflammation and apoptosis (programmed cell death), contributing to potential benefits in cardiovascular health, neuroprotection, skin health, and cancer prevention or therapy[1][4][5][8]. Preclinical studies suggest that it can downregulate enzymes involved in fatty acid synthesis (such as fatty acid synthase) and upregulate enzymes promoting fatty acid oxidation (such as carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A)[6]. Gamma- and delta-tocotrienols have shown particular promise for anticancer activity by inhibiting proliferation of cancer cells, inducing apoptosis, suppressing metastasis, and modulating key signaling pathways[8]. While widely used as a dietary supplement for general wellness or specific conditions like cardiovascular disease or neurodegeneration[5], robust clinical evidence supporting these uses remains limited.
