Overview

Gamolenic acid (also known as gamma-linolenic acid or GLA) is an omega-6 fatty acid derived from the seeds of plants such as *Borago officinalis* (borage). In Brazil, it is marketed under the brand name Gamaline by Herbarium Laboratório Botânico as a registered phytomedicine for the treatment of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and cyclical mastalgia. The therapeutic effect is primarily attributed to its metabolic conversion into dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA) and subsequently prostaglandin E1 (PGE1). PGE1 acts as an anti-inflammatory mediator and modulates the biological effects of prolactin, helping to reduce breast tenderness, fluid retention, and mood-related symptoms associated with hormonal cycles. Clinical trials have also evaluated Gamaline in combination with *Hypericum perforatum* (Hipericin) for the management of vasomotor symptoms and mood disturbances in premenopausal and climacteric women.
