Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A combination therapy used for treating severe ulcerative colitis complicated by cytomegalovirus colitis and microcirculatory disturbance. This specific combination was documented in a case study where ganciclovir was used as an antiviral agent for CMV colitis, mesalazine as an anti-inflammatory for ulcerative colitis, and papaverine was added as a vasodilator to address microcirculatory disturbance. The addition of papaverine resulted in dramatic improvement of symptoms that had been resistant to the initial treatments.
