Overview

Ganirelix is a synthetic decapeptide and a competitive gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist used primarily in assisted reproduction for women undergoing controlled ovarian hyperstimulation. By competitively blocking GnRH receptors on pituitary gonadotrophs, it rapidly and reversibly suppresses the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), thereby preventing premature LH surges and ovulation during fertility treatment. Unlike GnRH agonists, ganirelix does not cause an initial increase in gonadotropin levels or hypo-estrogenic side effects. It is administered as a subcutaneous injection. Developed and manufactured by Organon.
