Ganmaoling

Ganmaoling is a widely used Chinese over-the-counter remedy for the common cold and flu-like symptoms. It exists in two main forms: - As a traditional Chinese herbal formula containing extracts of Ilex asprella root (Rough-haired Holly), Evodia lepta root and leaf (Evodia), Chrysanthemum indicum flower (Chrysanthemum), Vitex negundo herb and root (Vitex/Chinese Chaste Tree), Isatis indigotica root (Isatis/Dyers woad), and Lonicera japonica flower bud (Honeysuckle). This herbal combination is believed to "dispel wind-heat or wind-cold," clear heat/toxins, relieve coughs, open nasal passages, and support immune/respiratory health according to Traditional Chinese Medicine principles[4][6][8][9]. - As an OTC pharmaceutical product in some markets under names like "Ganmaoling 999" or "999 GANMAOLING Cold," which contains acetaminophen (paracetamol) as an analgesic/antipyretic; caffeine as a stimulant/pain reliever aid; and chlorpheniramine maleate as an antihistamine. These formulations are intended for temporary relief of symptoms such as minor aches/pains, headache, sneezing/runny nose/nasal congestion/allergy symptoms/sore throat/fever associated with colds or hay fever[1][2]. The mechanism of action depends on the formulation: - The pharmaceutical version acts via acetaminophen's inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis for pain/fever reduction; chlorpheniramine's antagonism at histamine H1 receptors to reduce allergy/cold symptoms; caffeine's CNS stimulation. - The herbal version’s mechanisms are not fully elucidated but are traditionally described in TCM terms.
