Overview
Gaoyuankang is a compound pharmaceutical preparation developed by the Fourth Military Medical University (FMMU) in China, specifically designed for the prophylaxis and treatment of acute mountain sickness (AMS). The formulation is a combination of the potent corticosteroid dexamethasone with vitamins and electrolytes. Dexamethasone acts as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, which is effective in reducing capillary permeability and preventing the cerebral and pulmonary edema often associated with rapid ascent to high altitudes. To mitigate potential side effects of steroid use and support metabolic and neurological health under hypoxic conditions, the preparation also includes Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), Vitamin B1 (thiamine), and Potassium Chloride. It is primarily used by military personnel and recruits transitioning to high-altitude environments such as the Tibetan Plateau.
