Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Garcinia cambogia is a tropical fruit native to India and Southeast Asia. The fruit rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), which is the primary active ingredient studied for its potential effects on appetite suppression and inhibition of fat production by temporarily inhibiting the enzyme ATP-citrate lyase in the liver. Traditionally used in folk medicine for inflammation and stomach complaints as well as a food preservative, today it is widely marketed as a dietary supplement for weight management and appetite control. Evidence regarding its effectiveness for weight loss is mixed; some studies suggest modest benefit while others show no effect. Safety concerns include rare but serious cases of liver injury associated with use of supplements containing garcinia cambogia or HCA[1][5][7]. Other side effects may include gastrointestinal upset and headache.
