Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Garcinia mangostana pericarp extract is a botanical extract derived from the peel (pericarp) of the mangosteen fruit (*Garcinia mangostana*). It is rich in bioactive polyphenolic xanthones, primarily alpha-mangostin and beta-mangostin, which possess potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and photoprotective properties. Developed as a topical gel formulation by Hasanuddin University, the extract is being clinically evaluated for its ability to prevent and treat narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB)-induced skin redness (erythema) and hyperpigmentation in healthy adults. Its mechanism of action involves scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inhibiting inflammatory pathways, such as the cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LOX) pathways, thereby reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and prostaglandins.
