Garcinia mangostana pericarp gel is a 4% herbal formulation developed by Meenakshi Ammal Dental College and Hospital for the treatment of chronic periodontitis. The gel is derived from the pericarp (rind) of the mangosteen fruit and is used as a local drug delivery adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP). It exerts its therapeutic effects through antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities, specifically targeting red complex microorganisms such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, and Treponema denticola. By reducing the microbial load in subgingival tissues, the gel helps improve clinical parameters like pocket depth and attachment levels in patients with generalized chronic periodontitis.
