Overview

This is a combination of two herbal ingredients commonly used in traditional medicine, particularly in East Asia. "Garden balsam" typically refers to Impatiens balsamina, while "Platycladus orientalis" (also known as Oriental arborvitae or Chinese thuja) is a coniferous tree whose leaves and seeds are widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). While Platycladus orientalis has documented uses for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, hemostatic (bleeding control), diuretic, hair growth-promoting, neuroprotective and antifibrotic activities[1][3][5][7], the specific combination with garden balsam is not well-documented in Western scientific literature. In TCM practice, Platycladus orientalis leaves are often combined with other herbs to enhance hemostatic effects and treat bleeding disorders[1][3]. The mechanism of action for Platycladus orientalis includes inhibition of inflammation and oxidative stress via diterpenes and flavonoids; it may also act as a platelet-activating-factor antagonist due to compounds like pinusolide[6]. Garden balsam itself is traditionally used for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties but detailed mechanisms are less well characterized.
