Gardnerella lysins are engineered endolysin enzymes under development by Lysigen Biotechnology for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis (BV). These enzymes are derived from bacteriophages and are designed to specifically target and hydrolyze the peptidoglycan within the cell walls of *Gardnerella* species, which are the primary pathogens involved in BV. This enzymatic action leads to rapid osmotic lysis and death of the target bacteria. A key therapeutic advantage of this approach is its high specificity; the lysins are intended to eliminate *Gardnerella* while leaving the beneficial *Lactobacillus* species of the vaginal microbiome intact, potentially reducing the high rates of recurrence associated with conventional broad-spectrum antibiotic treatments. The program is currently in the preclinical stage of development.
