Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Garlic extract is a dietary supplement derived from the bulbs of *Allium sativum*. It has been used traditionally and in modern herbal medicine for cardiovascular health—including lowering blood pressure and cholesterol—and as an immunostimulant. Mechanistically, garlic extract exhibits hypolipidemic (lipid-lowering), antioxidant, antithrombotic (reducing blood clot formation), anti-inflammatory effects and may inhibit enzymes involved in cholesterol metabolism such as microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP) and acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT). These actions contribute to its potential benefits in atherosclerosis and hypertension. Garlic extracts are available in various forms including standardized tablets/capsules and aged extracts[3][4][5][6].
