Garlic gel is a topical formulation containing extracts from the bulb of Allium sativum (garlic), designed for direct application to the skin. Its active compounds include organosulfur constituents such as allicin, ajoene, S-allylcysteine, and S-allylmercaptocysteine, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory properties. In dermatology, garlic gel has shown efficacy as an adjunct therapy for alopecia areata and potential applications in the treatment of psoriasis, keloid scars, wound healing, and cutaneous corns. The presumed mechanisms involve modulation of nuclear factor kappaB (NF-κB) signaling, inhibition of inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide, matrix metalloproteinase-2, and interleukin-6, as well as enhancement of immune function. Topical use can cause skin irritation, allergic contact dermatitis, and rarely, more severe dermatologic reactions[2].
