Overview

Gastrin is a peptide hormone that primarily stimulates the secretion of gastric acid by the parietal cells of the stomach and aids in gastric motility. In a therapeutic context, gastrin analogues (such as G1) are being investigated for their potential to induce pancreatic beta-cell neogenesis and regeneration, particularly when administered in combination with epidermal growth factor (EGF) analogues like E1. This regenerative approach is aimed at restoring endogenous insulin production in patients with Type 1 Diabetes. Additionally, in certain clinical trial contexts, the term "gastrin" (or gastric membrane extract/gastromucin) refers to a substance used for its mucosal protective properties in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, often in combination with probiotics like Mutaflor.
