Overview

Gastrin-17 is a synthetic 17-amino acid peptide analogue of the naturally occurring gut hormone gastrin. It is being developed by City of Hope Medical Center, in collaboration with UCLA, primarily for the treatment of unstable type 1 diabetes mellitus. The therapeutic rationale is based on gastrin's role in embryogenesis, where it is present during pancreatic development. In clinical applications, Gastrin-17 is intended to promote pancreatic beta cell regeneration and enhance the function and survival of transplanted allogeneic human islet cells. By stimulating the cholecystokinin B receptor (CCK2R), the drug aims to improve glycemic control and potentially allow for insulin independence using a single donor's islet cells. It is administered as a subcutaneous injection.
