Overview

GEP-2 is a water-soluble polysaccharide fraction isolated from the rhizome of *Gastrodia elata* Blume, a plant widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. It is primarily characterized as a branched glucan with an α-D-glucose backbone and various monosaccharide substitutions, including galactose, rhamnose, and arabinose. Research indicates that GEP-2 possesses significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties. In preclinical models of ulcerative colitis, it has been shown to alleviate symptoms by suppressing the NF-κB and STAT3 signaling pathways, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6), and enhancing the intestinal barrier through the upregulation of tight junction proteins. Furthermore, GEP-2 modulates the gut microbiota, promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria such as *Dubosiella* and *Alistipes*. It also demonstrates neuroprotective effects by mitigating oxidative stress and inflammation in neuronal cells exposed to heavy metals.
