Gastrogel

Gastrogel is an over-the-counter oral liquid antacid combination formulation containing dried aluminium hydroxide gel, magnesium trisilicate, and magnesium hydroxide. It is manufactured by Aspen Pharma and distributed by Arrotex Pharmaceuticals (and previously Viatris) in Australia. Gastrogel works by chemically neutralizing gastric acid in the stomach, thereby raising gastric pH to provide rapid relief from symptoms of dyspepsia, indigestion, heartburn, epigastric pain, and upset stomach. In the Royal Melbourne Hospital's COOLAID clinical trial, Gastrogel monotherapy was evaluated against combinations of Gastrogel with oral lidocaine (viscous or solution) for the treatment of acute epigastric pain and dyspepsia in the emergency department. The trial demonstrated that antacid monotherapy with Gastrogel was equally effective in pain relief compared to the lidocaine combinations, while being significantly more palatable and better tolerated by patients.
