Overview

Gastrus is a probiotic dietary supplement developed by BioGaia that contains a specific combination of two human-derived strains of *Limosilactobacillus reuteri* (formerly *Lactobacillus reuteri*): DSM 17938 and ATCC PTA 6475. It is primarily utilized as an adjuvant to standard antibiotic regimens for the eradication of *Helicobacter pylori* infection, where it has been shown to enhance eradication rates and mitigate gastrointestinal adverse effects, such as antibiotic-associated diarrhea. The formulation leverages the complementary properties of its constituent strains: DSM 17938 (a daughter strain of ATCC 55730) provides gastric support and inhibits pathogen colonization, while ATCC PTA 6475 exhibits high acid resistance and potent anti-inflammatory effects. Beyond *H. pylori*, Gastrus is being investigated for the prevention of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) and dysbiosis in children on proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), the management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and the reduction of pesticide toxicity (e.g., chlordecone) through bacterial hydrolase activity.
