Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Gatorade is a non-carbonated sports drink originally developed to replenish water, carbohydrates, and electrolytes in athletes. In the context of clinical research conducted by the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System, Gatorade has been investigated for its potential to reduce the risk of urolithiasis (kidney stone formation). The therapeutic rationale involves the drink's ability to alter urinary chemistry; specifically, its citrate content may increase urinary citrate excretion and raise urinary pH, both of which are known to inhibit the crystallization of calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate. Furthermore, the high fluid intake associated with Gatorade consumption increases total urinary volume, thereby diluting stone-forming salts and reducing the overall lithogenicity of the urine.
