Gavilimomab is a murine (mouse-derived) IgM monoclonal antibody developed as an immunosuppressive biologic for the treatment of glucocorticoid-resistant graft versus host disease (GVHD). It specifically targets the CD147 antigen, also known as basigin, which is weakly expressed on human leukocytes and upregulated on activated lymphocytes and T cells. By binding to CD147, gavilimomab inhibits T cell activation and function, thereby suppressing immune responses involved in GVHD. The drug was originally developed by Abgenix (later acquired by Amgen) and reached phase 3 clinical trials for several indications including steroid-refractory GVHD, psoriasis, renal transplant rejection, and rheumatoid arthritis. However, it was discontinued after proving slightly less effective than standard antithymocyte globulin therapy in clinical studies[1][3][4][5][8].
