Gaviscon Advance is a reflux suppressant medication for the relief of heartburn and acid indigestion (dyspepsia), including symptoms such as burning in the chest, bloating, sour taste in the mouth, and difficulty swallowing. It is suitable for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The product forms a protective layer that floats on top of stomach contents to prevent reflux into the esophagus. Its active ingredients are sodium alginate and potassium hydrogen carbonate (potassium bicarbonate). The mechanism of action involves both antacid effects to neutralize excess stomach acid and alginate raft formation to physically block reflux.
