Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Gaviscon Double Action** is an over-the-counter antacid and alginate combination product available as chewable tablets or oral suspension, primarily used for symptomatic relief of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), heartburn, acid regurgitation, indigestion, and hyperacidity, including during pregnancy or postprandially. Upon ingestion, sodium alginate reacts with gastric acid to form a floating raft of alginic acid gel with near-neutral pH that impedes reflux by physically floating on stomach contents; calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate provide rapid acid neutralization (total capacity ~10 mEqH+ per lowest dose). Its physical mode of action avoids systemic absorption, with formulations that are sugar-free, lactose-free, aluminum-free, and gluten-free.[1][2][5]
