GB0139 (formerly TD139) is a selective, inhaled small molecule inhibitor of galectin-3, currently under clinical investigation for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and other respiratory conditions such as COVID-19 pneumonitis and acute lung injury. Galectin-3 is a protein implicated in tissue scarring (fibrosis) and inflammation. By inhibiting galectin-3, GB0139 aims to reduce fibrotic tissue formation and inflammation in the lungs. The drug is administered via inhalation to directly target lung epithelial cells while minimizing systemic exposure. Preclinical studies have shown that GB0139 reduces neutrophil recruitment, inflammatory cytokine production, and fibrotic processes in the lung. Developed by Galecto, it has received orphan drug designation for IPF in both the EU and US[2][4][5][8].
