**GBCA-HDL** is an experimental macrophage-targeted magnetic resonance imaging contrast-agent platform composed of gadolinium-containing, high-density-lipoprotein-like lipid nanoparticles incorporating apolipoprotein A-I or synthetic apolipoprotein A-I peptide fragments. Oxidation of methionine residues in the apolipoprotein component promotes uptake by macrophages, enabling preferential accumulation in macrophage-rich atherosclerotic plaques and enhanced MRI signal in apolipoprotein E-deficient mouse models. The platform was developed by SignaBlok for diagnostic imaging of vulnerable atherosclerotic plaque rather than for direct therapeutic treatment.
