Overview

GBI268 is a long-acting, multivesicular liposome formulation of the local anesthetic bupivacaine, developed by Guangzhou Zhiyao Biotechnology. It is designed for the management of postoperative pain through local infiltration at the surgical site. The multivesicular liposome (MVL) technology enables the sustained release of bupivacaine over an extended period (typically up to 72 hours), providing prolonged analgesia and potentially reducing the requirement for postoperative opioids. Bupivacaine exerts its effect by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve fibers, thereby inhibiting the initiation and conduction of sensory nerve impulses. GBI268 is currently in Phase III clinical development in China for indications such as postoperative pain following hemorrhoidectomy and bunionectomy.
