Overview

GBS-007 is a ranibizumab biosimilar developed by Kidswell Bio (formerly Gene Techno Science) in collaboration with Senju Pharmaceutical. It is a recombinant humanized IgG1 monoclonal antibody fragment (Fab) designed to bind and inhibit vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A). By neutralizing VEGF-A, GBS-007 prevents the activation of VEGFR1 and VEGFR2 receptors on the surface of vascular endothelial cells, thereby suppressing the proliferation of new blood vessels (neovascularization) and reducing vascular permeability. It was approved and launched in Japan in September 2021 as the first ophthalmic VEGF inhibitor biosimilar, primarily indicated for the treatment of neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration and other retinal vascular disorders, offering a cost-effective alternative to the reference product, Lucentis.
