The GBS bioconjugate vaccine is a preclinical-stage polysaccharide conjugate vaccine being developed by Omniose (formerly VaxNewMo) for the prevention of Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infections in neonates and older adults. The vaccine is produced using a proprietary enzymatic bioconjugation platform that employs synthetic biology to link GBS capsular polysaccharide antigens to engineered carrier proteins within a single re-engineered E. coli cell. Unlike conventional chemical conjugation methods that can degrade sialic acid residues through oxidation, this one-step enzymatic process retains 100% of the sialic acid residues, which is considered essential for eliciting optimal functional antibody responses against GBS. The program has received significant funding from the NIH/NIAID to support its advancement toward clinical trials.
