GBS glycoconjugate vaccine

The GBS glycoconjugate vaccine is an investigational trivalent biologic developed by Novartis Vaccines (now part of GSK) to prevent invasive Group B Streptococcal (GBS) disease. It is composed of purified capsular polysaccharides from GBS serotypes Ia, Ib, and III, each individually conjugated to the non-toxic diphtheria toxin mutant carrier protein CRM197. The vaccine is primarily intended for maternal immunization during pregnancy to induce high titers of serotype-specific IgG antibodies. These maternal antibodies are transplacentally transferred to the fetus, providing passive immunity to neonates against early-onset and late-onset GBS infections, which are significant causes of neonatal sepsis and meningitis.
