GBS III-TT is an investigational conjugate vaccine composed of the capsular polysaccharide (CPS) from Group B Streptococcus (GBS) serotype III covalently linked to tetanus toxoid protein. The vaccine is designed to induce a robust immune response against the serotype III capsule of GBS by leveraging the immunogenicity of tetanus toxoid as a carrier protein. This approach enhances antibody production against the otherwise poorly immunogenic bacterial polysaccharide. The primary indication for this vaccine is prevention of maternal colonization with GBS serotype III and subsequent reduction in perinatal transmission and neonatal disease such as sepsis and meningitis. Clinical trials have demonstrated that vaccination with GBS III-TT significantly increases serum levels of anti-GBS type III CPS-specific IgG antibodies and delays or prevents vaginal and rectal colonization by serotype III strains in women[1][6][8]. However, protection is specific to serotype III; multivalent formulations are needed for broader coverage.
