Overview

GBS-NN is a recombinant protein-based subunit vaccine developed to prevent infections caused by group B Streptococcus (GBS), particularly in pregnant women and neonates. The vaccine consists of a fusion protein containing the N-terminal domains of the AlphaC and Rib surface proteins from Streptococcus agalactiae, designed to elicit an immune response that generates protective antibodies. These antibodies are intended to cross the placenta, providing passive immunity to newborns against life-threatening neonatal infections such as sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis. Clinical studies have shown that GBS-NN is well tolerated and highly immunogenic in healthy adults, with robust IgG responses maintained for at least one year after vaccination. The development program has since expanded to include a dual-component formulation (GBS-NN/NN2) covering additional alpha-like proteins for broader protection[1][3][6][8].
