The combination of cisplatin, gemcitabine, and interleukin-2 (GC + IL-2) is a chemotherapy regimen that combines two cytotoxic agents with an immunotherapy component. It specifically targets rapidly dividing cells, such as cancer cells[1][4]. **Interleukin-2** is an immunotherapy agent that stimulates the growth and activity of T cells and natural killer cells, enhancing the body's immune response against cancer. ## Administration The combination is typically administered intravenously: - Gemcitabine: 1,000 mg/m² on days 1 and 8 of a 21-day cycle - Cisplatin: 70 mg/m² on day 1 of a 21-day cycle[2][4] - Interleukin-2: Administered according to specific protocols For patients with reduced kidney function (creatinine clearance between 50-59 mL/min), cisplatin dosing may be adjusted to 35 mg/m² on days 1 and 8[2]. ## Treatment Duration Patients typically receive up to six cycles of the chemotherapy components (gemcitabine and cisplatin)[2]. ## Side Effects Common side effects of this combination therapy include: - Fatigue and weakness - Nausea and vomiting - Decreased blood cell counts (which can lead to increased risk of infection, bleeding, and anemia) - Fluid retention - Hearing changes or loss, including tinnitus - Kidney function changes - Heart rhythm abnormalities - Sleep disturbances - Fluid build-up in the body[4] ## Cancer Types Treated This combination has been used to treat various types of cancer, including: - Urothelial carcinoma (bladder cancer) - Lung cancer - Various carcinomas and sarcomas - Lymphomas - Germ cell tumors[1][3] The gemcitabine and cisplatin (GC) component is considered a standard therapy for metastatic urothelial carcinoma, with the addition of interleukin-2 intended to enhance anti-tumor immune responses[2].
