GC4761 is a small molecule superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimic developed by Galera Therapeutics. It is designed to selectively convert superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide and oxygen, thereby reducing oxidative stress and mitigating tissue damage caused by ionizing radiation. In preclinical models of thoracic radiotherapy, GC4761 has demonstrated the ability to improve overall survival and reduce chronic cardiopulmonary complications, such as radiation pneumonitis, by addressing mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) dysfunction. The compound acts as a catalyst to address the dose-limiting toxicities associated with upper body irradiation.
