GCS-100 is a first-in-class, complex polysaccharide derived from modified citrus pectin. It functions as a galectin‑3 inhibitor by binding to the carbohydrate-binding domain of galectin‑3, thereby blocking its activity. Galectin‑3 is implicated in processes such as inhibition of apoptosis, promotion of angiogenesis, metastasis, and cellular proliferation. By antagonizing galectin‑3, GCS‑100 induces apoptosis and inhibits cell adhesion and angiogenesis. The drug was developed primarily for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and various cancers including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, multiple myeloma, liver disorders, and renal failure[2][5][6][9]. Clinical trials have shown that it was well-tolerated in CKD patients with some evidence of efficacy[6]. Development has been discontinued for all known indications.
