Drug intelligence / Profile preview
GCWB109 is a probiotic health functional food ingredient developed by GC Green Cross Wellbeing. It consists of the specific lactic acid bacterium strain *Lactobacillus plantarum* GCWB1001 (also classified as *Lactiplantibacillus plantarum* GCWB1001), which was originally isolated from Korean kimchi. GCWB109 is designed to support respiratory health and reduce airway inflammation caused by environmental factors such as fine dust. In preclinical models of asthma, oral administration of the probiotic strain demonstrated protective effects by reducing the infiltration of inflammatory cells, suppressing the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (including TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, and IL-6), and inhibiting matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) activity and oxidative stress. A Phase 2 clinical trial has evaluated its efficacy and safety in improving respiratory symptoms such as cough and breathlessness.
