Gd@C82 fullerenol is a water-soluble, functionalized **endohedral metallofullerene** where a gadolinium (Gd) ion is encapsulated within a C82 fullerene cage, and functionalized with multiple hydroxyl and oxygen-containing groups. It combines the paramagnetic properties of gadolinium for potential use as an MRI contrast agent and demonstrates promising anticancer, antimetastatic, and antioxidant activities. Gd@C82 fullerenol exhibits low toxicity, efficient reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging, and can disrupt tumor vasculature and inhibit metastatic processes not by cytotoxicity but by inhibiting matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) production and blocking interaction with tumor-associated macrophages. The agent is also being explored for its protective effects against oxidative stress in cells and for potential theranostic applications (diagnosis and therapy) including imaging and cancer treatment. Its biomedical relevance is due to the unique combination of high Gd-based MRI contrast, biocompatibility, water solubility, and novel antineoplastic mechanisms[1][2][3][4][5].
