GDC-6988 is an investigational small molecule drug developed as an inhaled potentiator of the TMEM16A (also known as ANO1 or anoctamin 1) chloride channel. It is designed to increase the activity of TMEM16A on airway epithelial cells, thereby enhancing chloride ion transport and improving mucociliary clearance in the lungs. This mechanism aims to address diseases characterized by thickened mucus and impaired airway hydration, such as cystic fibrosis (CF), non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The drug is administered via a dry powder inhaler. Clinical trials have evaluated its safety and pharmacokinetics in healthy volunteers and are ongoing in patients with muco-obstructive lung diseases.
