Overview

GEC-TGF-β1 is an **injectable cell therapy** consisting of genetically engineered chondrocytes virally transduced to express transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1). Developed to treat degenerative joint disease, specifically knee osteoarthritis, GEC-TGF-β1 introduces allogeneic human chondrocytes that secrete TGF-β1 into the joint space. TGF-β1 is a cytokine with anti-inflammatory and tissue regenerative properties. Preclinical and Phase II clinical studies indicate that intra-articular injection of GEC-TGF-β1 improves joint function and reduces pain in patients with osteoarthritis by modulating inflammatory signaling and promoting cartilage repair[2]. The therapy is developed by TissueGene and labeled in trials as TG-C.
