Overview

Gedocarnil is a small molecule $\beta$-carboline derivative that acts as a partial agonist at the benzodiazepine site of the GABA-A receptor. Originally developed by Bayer AG and later investigated by Schering AG, it was explored as a potential anxiolytic and nootropic agent for the treatment of cognitive disorders and anxiety. Despite reaching Phase I clinical trials in Germany, its development was discontinued. It is chemically related to abecarnil and is characterized by its ability to modulate GABAergic neurotransmission with potentially fewer side effects than full benzodiazepine agonists.
