Overview

Geftisym is a branded generic formulation of gefitinib, a small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitor developed and manufactured by Symbion Life Science. It is specifically indicated for the treatment of patients with locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who harbor activating mutations in the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene. Geftisym works by reversibly binding to the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) binding site of the EGFR tyrosine kinase domain, thereby inhibiting autophosphorylation and blocking downstream signal transduction pathways such as RAS/MAPK and PI3K/Akt. This inhibition leads to the arrest of the cell cycle and induction of apoptosis in cancer cells that are dependent on EGFR signaling for growth and survival.
