Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Gegenqinlian Decoction is a classic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula originally recorded in the *Shanghan Lun*. It is composed of four medicinal herbs: *Puerariae Lobatae Radix* (Gegen), *Scutellariae Radix* (Huangqin), *Coptidis Rhizoma* (Huanglian), and *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle* (Zhigancao). The formula is primarily indicated for the treatment of 'damp-heat' syndrome, which manifests clinically as acute diarrhea, dysentery, and ulcerative colitis. Modern pharmacological research indicates that Gegenqinlian Decoction exerts its therapeutic effects through multi-target mechanisms, including the modulation of gut microbiota composition, reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-alpha and IL-6) via the NF-kappaB and TLR4 signaling pathways, and improvement of glucose metabolism in type 2 diabetes by enhancing GLP-1 secretion. It is frequently used in integrative medicine alongside conventional therapies like mesalazine for gastrointestinal disorders.
