The gel vehicle is a sterile, inactive topical formulation developed by MediWound Ltd to serve as both the delivery medium for NexoBrid (anacaulase-bcdb) and the placebo control in clinical trials, such as the Phase 3 DETECT study. It is designed to be mixed with the active proteolytic enzymes (lyophilized powder) of NexoBrid before application to deep partial-thickness and full-thickness thermal burns. In clinical studies, it serves as the comparator to evaluate the efficacy of enzymatic eschar removal, where it lacks the active debriding properties of the bromelain-derived enzymes. In the DETECT trial, the gel vehicle demonstrated minimal efficacy (4.0% eschar removal) compared to the active NexoBrid formulation (93.3%).
