Gelatin is a proteinaceous substance produced by the partial hydrolysis of collagen derived from animal connective tissues, bones, and skin. In clinical medicine, it is primarily utilized as a synthetic colloid solution for intravenous plasma volume expansion. Its therapeutic application is centered on the management of hypovolemia, shock (including septic and post-traumatic shock), and the stabilization of hemodynamics in critically ill patients. Gelatin works by increasing the plasma oncotic pressure, which facilitates the retention and recruitment of fluid within the intravascular compartment. Beyond its use as a volume expander, gelatin is also employed as a dietary supplement; research indicates that oral ingestion of gelatin protein can stimulate the release of growth hormone (GH) from the anterior pituitary, potentially aiding in the management of metabolic syndrome and obesity. However, clinical studies in intensive care settings have associated the use of gelatin-based resuscitation fluids with an increased risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) compared to crystalloid solutions.
